Nightline profiles one of the pioneers of hip hop, Russell Simmons. A prominent figure in hip hop since its birth almost 25 years ago, Simmons’ career began with promoting local parties. He then co-founded Def Jam Records and is now running his company, Rush Communications, estimated to be worth $200 million, which includes his franchise, Phat Farm clothing. Phat Farm Clothing: Kevin Leong, a former graffiti artist and high school dropout who aspired to be a rapper and dee jay, met Simmons on an elevator. Despite a contentious first exchange, Simmons hired Leong the next day to work on his clothing line, Phat Farm. With his knack for keeping the styles fresh and appealing to hip-hop consumers, Leong, 22, is now the head designer of Phat Farm clothing, which is projected to ring in $150 million in sales this year Phat Farm Clothing: phat farm has very "urban" clothing. the men's clothing is quite nice and appealing -- i could envision nsync or the backstreet boys wearing this and looking good. (today i am on a boyband kick!) my friend used to manage the store about five or six years ago. Phat Farm Clothing: If there are signs of optimism, cognac companies are taking nothing for granted. Hennessy has been spending millions on aspirational magazine ads featuring club-goers in expensive clothing. Rival Courvoisier has hired New York's youth-oriented dRush agency, co-founded by Russell Simmons, who also controls the pioneering rap music label Def Jam Records and the urban-look Phat Farm clothing company. Martell has created the "Martell girl" campaign, featuring a live 25-year-old beauty who shows up at promo parties. Phat Farm Clothing: I am going to be visiting the Big Apple in the middle of next month. Can you recommend some places to visit where I can purchase good top quality R&B, Hip-Hop and Soul music on CD format fairly cheap. I have been before but I only went to Virgin on Times Square and Tower etc... Also where do you recommend to go if I want to buy Triple 5 Soul, Sean John, Phat Farm clothing? I got some stuff in Macy's last time but I paid through the nose for it.
