The capsule is not interchangeable or moveable, so it is not like the Bottle in that regard. The Baby Bottle uses an edge-terminated diaphragm that is unique in the BLUE line as far as I know. The mic also sounds different than any other BLUE I've heard (and I've heard them all). baby bottle: So what does it sound like, you wonder? As you may know, I'm a ribbon mic fanatic. The thing that impresses me the most about the Baby Bottle is its prominent and rich midrange tone, which compares very favorably to some of my best ribbons. I've taken to using it many sources I'd normally mic with a ribbon - acoustic bass, violin, flute, electric guitar - and have been pretty knocked out with the results. I've also found it to work very well on female vocals in situations where you don't need to much extra crispiness in the highs. Of course you also get a bit more of that high end condenser definition with the Baby Bottle (although less brightness than the majority of the BLUE mics), and WAY MORE output than any ribbon mic. The Baby Bottle has unbelievably hot output, and very low noise. baby bottle: I put the Baby Bottle up into the other channel of the VMP-2 and the Summit right to tape which in this case was Adat XT's. I set a level that was about the same and recorded both mics to separate tracks. The Baby Bottle had a stronger presence and upper midrange peak so it cut more then the 103 but the 103 seemed to be a little spittier and more annoying in a way. Also, while the self noise of the mic seemed to be lower (there was less hiss on that track, might've been the Summit vs. the 1176) it did a (very) slightly better job of picking up the fan noise from the JH-24. As a side note we were cutting vocals in the control room with both of us wearing headphones and sharing a mix. Anyway, the mics seemed to be pretty close in output but the Baby Bottle seemed to be a little hotter. In the end we picked the Baby Bottle track because it did a better job with the fast delivery that Harley was dishing out and it was more intelligible. baby bottle: The Baby Bottle shock comes with a metal pop screen, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was made in Latvia. It looks high quality, and I like the heft of those bizarre thumbscrews that clamp it to the neck of the mic. I wish it didn't take so damn many revolutions to thread them on and off. I like Blue products, and I even like the Blueberry, which has gotten some bad press on RAP. I use it a lot for vocals and acoustic instruments. I like the Baby Bottle, and it sounded great on a dobro last week.
