A lot of people dislike plastic because it doesn't "breathe", but we haven't had any problems with diaper rash that weren't a result of something Mickey ate or leaving him in a wet or messy diaper too long (our fault, not the diaper cover's). Margaret hasn't had a diaper rash yet (knock on wood :-). diaper cover: As far as avoiding tummy rashes, after we put the cover on, we tuck it around the diaper at the waist & legs. This makes sure that there's no diaper sticking out (the source of many leaks, we've found) and keeps the plastic away from skin that's not protected by the diaper - there's no need to have a diaper cover over the baby's belly, since there's no diaper there! diaper cover: BTW, we've shared our nanny with a friend whose daughter is in diaper wraps & the nanny much prefers the snap-on plastic pants. When Katy was sick one day & had messy-leaked out of every diaper wrap (and outfit) her parents had sent over, she put her in one of Mickey's snap-ons & onesies & snap-on pants. It was the last time she had to change clothes, since the cover didn't leak. diaper cover: The pattern I'm going to get is "Back to Basics Diaper Patterns" which comes with three diaper cover styles with numerous variations and five diaper styles from flat flannelette square to old English terry nappy to heavy-duty prefold to state-of-the-art all-in-one Ultra diaper. Plus helpful diapering hints. $9.95. The other one is a pull on which I won't get. They've got the best assortment of diaper patterns and ready-made diapers I've ever seen, although prices are a little high. BTW, I'm not in any way associated with this company, just a potential customer. diaper cover: What! We only have just over 3 dozen diapers. I can't fit more in the diaper pail anyway (and still lift it, that is)! I do a load of diapers every 2-3 days--no big deal. I figure what's the use of having more diapers? I'd have to do laundry that often anyway, or get a hernia trying to dump the diapers into the washer. As for covers, we can get by with 6 in each size. We generally don't change the diaper cover until he poops (which usually gets all over everything, thus rendering the cover in need of a washing). We usually have two diaper covers going at once--one air drying and the other on him. We keep trading back and forth until they get dirty.
