I'm personally not the type that had to have all the baby-stuff - I did without a changing table or even a regular crib for a long time. But not everyone, or every baby, works well with the slings and carriers. I thought I was going to trapse about happily with free arms and my blissful, emotionally-bonded infant in one of *four* carriers that I got as baby-welcoming gifts. Well, my son hated being strapped to my front *or* my back - facing front, facing in, cradled, whatever - he just squirmed and fussed (I still have two unused back-pack carriers to give away!). But one other gift I got was a Graco baby carriage that could convert to a substantial stroller and back. Now *that* was useful, and he took many fresh-air naps in it while I got a little mild exercise when he was a young infant, and he still uses it as a stroller even at five years of age when we go to craft fairs, etc. The "simple umbrella stroller" I got was great for flying, etc., and I picked one up for $12.00. But when I have a trunk to carry it in, the Graco set-up is by far the best child-carrying thingie I've had. graco baby stroller: As for the 4-in-1, see my post under "Okay, call me crazy." I just purchased Graco's top-of-the-line 4-in-1, and so far (albeit I have no baby for it yet), I love it. It's so easy to use, fairly lightweight, and doesn't take up too much room. If trunk space is a concern, consider the Combi perfect match stroller. It is a stroller onto which you can snap any infant carseat, to make a 4-in-1. The trouble is that the stroller is over $200, and the carseats cost around $75. I got my 4-in-1 on sale from babygear.com for $129, instead of the usual $200+. Consider how you will be using the stroller/carseat. graco baby stroller: When I'm shopping, it will be easier for short me to keep the baby in the seat snapped on the shopping cart or stroller rather than carry it, as I often have to reach for items. If you will want just a basic stroller and don't care about storage space underneath and such, an umbrella stroller will be much cheaper, but if you're looking for features like being able to recline fully, having storage and cupholders, and ultimate convenience, a 4-in-1 might just be what you want. I figured I'd buy an infant carseat and a more complex stroller, so why not buy them together? Anyway, sorry this is so long. Feel free to email me if you have further questions regarding Graco or Evenflo, or, heck, any other baby gear (I've done TONS of research).
